My artworks.
Most of the scultpures and installations are made before 2005, when I moved to New York. In New York, I started working on interactive media. As you will see I like exploring materials from traditional medium such as pencil drawings, clay, and irons to wired wires, motors and computers.

Computational Media

[ TimeScanned ] 360 degree time lapse photographs. Collaboration with Leif Krinkle. 2005

TimeScanned is an experiment with time, space and image processing. Computer takes only one small slit of the image that the camera is captureing and adds it to previously scanned images that in real time. Thus, each pixel represents different moment. The image above contains the moments from a bus arrived, got passangers and took off.

This allowed us to create extremely long panoramic images composed of thousands of small slits of images, deforming space, time, and moving objects. By controlling the camera's movement and capturing duration, we were able to get 360 degree slit scanned images from New York City. Each of the images(below) are taken over the course of 45 minutes by rotating digital camera very slowly. There is 45 minuite interval from tje left to the right.

[ Imaginary Sketchbook ] Interactive Installation for Drawing. 2006

What if your drawings could come alive and interact with you? Imaginary sketchbook is an interactive performance installation which takes its inspiration from this idea. The performer draws onto a real canvas and imaginary images are projected onto the screen placed next to it. The lines that the performer draws turn into animated people or dogs which walk off screen. When the performer draws a speaker, it triggers the program to play sounds etc. This project integrates MAX/MSP, Flash Animation, ActionScript2 and Flosc(Flash Open Source Control).

[ Missing Link ] Computational Image Processing of Skull Images of Missing Links Between Human-Dog-Deer

"Missing Link" is a popular term for fossils of tansitional forms. It is a hypothetical primate once thought necessary to explain a perceived evolutionary gap between apes and humans.

Electronic Sculpture

[ Yellow Submarine ] Physical Computing : Interactive Installation of Dominos of Circuits. Collaboration of Jury Hahn. 2006

Yellow Submarine is a performative sculpture composed of electronic circuits. Each circuit drives an action which physically triggers the next circuit to begin and propagating the mechanical narrative. After triggering the initial switch, an audience member can watch the chain reaction progressing until all of the components end up in their original positions.

SENARIO :
0_an audience member pulls down the main power switch, turning it on.
1_the yellow submarine moves down a path lighting leds as it travels
2_when the submarine reaches the LED shore, the LEDs make light waves.
3_the waves make the circular flipbooks rotate, animating the sea creatures
4_this rotation makes the pulley block move
5_the weight at the end of the pulley block switches on the counter
6_the counter adds one and switches flips the main power switch off.

[ Fish the Legs ] Physical Computing : Toy Design. 2006

Fish the Legs is a prototype toy for children ages 4 to 7. By manipulating a reel and two switches, the user positions the wooden dog in an attempt to grab the dogs´ magnetic legs. The process of manipulating the reel to maneuver the dog develops spatial relations and understanding of basic principles of physics.

[ a man - a dog ] Circuitry Sculpture. 2006

The idea behind this project is to experiment storytelling methods in sculpture. I wanted to express the tension between the dog and the person in multiple ways. The iron plates not only represent the shapes of the dog and the man but function as electric cords. Their ends meet at the light bulb on the dog´s collar.

[ a fisherman - a fish ] Electronic sculpture : A frame with two small animations. 2004

This frame has two small holes through which audience can view two animations. The animation on the left is of a fisherman reeling in his catch, on the right side is an animation of a fish pulling at a fishing line. The animations are simple circular flipbooks, driven by maotors mounted to the back of the frame. Pictured below are still frames from each animation and the back of the frame with attached apparatus.

A 90x50cm frame, motor and two animations are used for this project.

Installations + Performance

[ Crossing Performance ] Performance of 12 Color-coded People Crossing Street. 2005

12 performers dressed in one of four different colors cross the street at this busy intersection. When they cross each other, they trade their hats. After six crossings, those performers with the same colored hats will be standing in the same spot. This algorithmic performance expresses the hidden rules in everyday actions.

[ Missing Link ] Installation of Skull Figures of Missing Links Between Human-Dog-Deer. 2004

By creating the intermediate figures between two different objects, I tried to visualize the similarities and amplify the connection between the objects. Made of clay measuring roughly 20x30x20cm, The skulls pictured above represent dog, human, and deer skulls and the intermediate forms between each.

[ Missing Link ] Installation of Skull Drawings of Missing Links Between Heel of a Shoe and Heel of a Pig. 2004

This set of drawings express the same idea as the skull sculptures, but using feet instead. The leftmost drawing pictures a pig´s foot and the rightmost picture is of a woman´s high-heeled shoe. By creating intermediate images between these two objects, I demonstrated the connections between them.

[ Fat | Slim & Standing | Sitting ] Installation of Figures of 50 People: half sitting, half standing, half fat, half slim. 2004

50 people in this installation are classified by their look and position. The two standards make more complex group of people:
group FAT, group SLIM, group STANDING, group SITTING,
group FAT AND SITTING, group FAT AND STANDING, group SLIM AND SITTING,
group SLIM AND STANDING

[ Myung Myung Baek Baek ] Instructional comic book series illustration and art direction. 2009 - present

Myung Myung Baek Baek is a series of instructional comic book for highschool students. A friend of mine, Boram Park, one of the most talented designer I know, started this project and I joined from the beginning. Our first book, General Geography for 1st years, published in April 2010 and many more is coming. We direct concepts thoughout the series, and I illustrate and create the characters. If you know any Korean highschool student, get him/her a copy at mmbb.kr!

[ KBS Drama Awards Trophy ] Trophy Design and Protyping for annual KBS Drama Awards. 2004

I was asked to design and prototype the new trophy for the annual KBS Drama Awards. The Drama awards are given annually to exceptional performers and producers in Korean television. The trophy is also used as a primary motif in the KBS Drama Awards website. Picture is the 2005 winners with their trophies.
